Far off into the Mojave Desert we arrive at a spacey landscape so iconic its been the setting of numerous movies & TV shows.
After struggling to set up camp in an unrelenting wind, we embark on a hike under the moonlight through an array of pinnacles formed beneath an ancient inland sea.
The continuous gusts whizzed about while we overeagerly began climbing. 20 mph ground winds raised to an incomprehensible level atop the towering formations. Let's just say climbing didn't last long.
Pre-sunrise creates an alien world. A soft pink band hugs the skyline of ancient sea towers.
In a matter of minutes the sun crests, quickly changing the vibe of the scenery.
Golden orange cloaks the pinnacles while the shadows dance across the desert.
With the wind finally deadened, climbing becomes a more achievable endeavor than the previous night.
Each separate pinnacle offered up a new perspective of the otherworldly topography.
Back at camp we power down some grub prior to heading off again before the desert sun begins its daily burn.
Curiosity typically serves as our main drive to explore. The simple act of getting to know one's surroundings promotes a strange sense of excitement & accomplishment.
Nestled at the base of a pinnacle we find an old mining cave.
The cavern was small but highlighted the significant mineral deposits that initiated settlement throughout much of the West.
Strutting back to the car we saddle up & head over to a little-visited bouldering mecca in another slot of the Mojave.
On the way we can't resist the urge to hop along an abandoned train.
The rusted heap metal brought forth imaginings of the bygone train era, a truly revolutionary tool for travel.
And we had plenty of fun wandering around.
Atop a mass of rock we scout for a nearby bouldering route.
Once spotted we relish in the final hours of our trip. Home & responsibility beckon. Until next time Comrades.
